The Heavy Draft Breton is the largest one, standing up to 16.2 hands tall at the withers, and the most muscular one of the three. The Poister is renowned for his light walk and graceful look. In the 19th century, it was influenced by the English Norfolk Trotter and the Hackney.

There are three types of the Breton breed, which include the Heavy Draft Breton, the Poister Breton and the Corlay Breton. The Corlay Breton features a dished face, and is considered to be a real descendant of the old-time Breton horse.
