There are three types of the breed: the Heavy Draft, the Poister and the Corlay. These varieties originated by crossbreeding native horses with other breeds, such as Boulonnais, Percheron Ardennais, Norfolk Trotter and Hackney. They differ in size and body build.

These horses originated in the northeast of France, a province, called Bretagne (Britton). The breed has been around for about a thousand years. Britton is a land of poor soil and harsh weather, so the animal’s characteristics were to meet the requirements of the climate.
