There were many bloods added to this one. Thus in the mid-19th century the influence of the Norfolk Roadster was introduced. No outside blood was permitted after the 1920s. Nowadays the breed is recognized as two types: the Heavy Draft and the Postier.

This breed was originated in Brittany, in northwest France. The ancestry of these horses is possibly connected through the Somnier, which links to the little horse from the Black Mountains. This horse was so crossbred with the Boulonnais and the Percheron in order to create a heavier and stronger horse.
