These animals came to America in the 1600s with English Colonists, and over centuries, they became an inalienable part of the American culture. These muscular and enduring racers were and are widely used in rodeo competitions, and they are present in every western movie. They occur in 13 different colors, which include sorrel, gray, gray-brown, red dun, gray beige with a reddish or bluish tint, grullo, palomino, bay, brown, buckskin, chestnut and black. The first noted improver of this breed was William Anson of Christoval, Texas. He collected a band of stallions and mares of a high quality and concentrated bloodlines that were useful either in racing or for ranch work. Another noted breeder was W.T.Waggoner of Vernon, Texas. He collected the fastest short-distance species in an attempt to produce the fastest possible foals. Many ranchers or persons interested in equine sports have contributed to the development of the breed since the 16th century. Not all their names are known today due to lack of a separate registry. American quarter horse asso breeders can be found on special horse resources.
